Government scheme to help debt branded a failure!
A government scheme to help the millions of people struggling from debt has been described as a complete failure by MPs.
With 10% of people said to be struggling with managing their debts, and a collective estimated consumer debt of £1.5 trillion, the government set up a debt programme to offer support to those feeling the pinch and to try and reduce those who suffer in future. However Edward Leigh, chairman of The Public Accounts Committee who have been reviewing the effectiveness of the strategy has been less than impressed, describing the management of the strategy as less than satisfactory. A total of 51 interventions were introduced to help the public cope with the backlash of irresponsible lending practises employed in the run up to the credit crunch, however forums such as The Citizen Advice Bureau have struggled to cope with the demand as the requirement for debt advice has increased exponentially. The chairman suggested that the government needed to work more closely with the private sector so that good quality debt advice is more widely available to those that need it.
